About Graham Lower — 27 Years in the Motor Trade, Now Working for Privately-Owned Franchised Main Dealers
After 27 years in automotive retail, I’ve seen exactly how franchised dealerships win — and how they quietly fall behind while the AM100 groups and factory-direct agency models take the market from underneath them.
Buyers now begin their journey online. Most privately-owned and family-run franchised main dealers are either invisible at that moment, or losing the click to a Sytner or Arnold Clark site with a dedicated SEO team and a seven-figure digital budget.
I fix that. With SEO and PPC built specifically for franchised retail — not adapted from a generic agency template.
What I Deliver for Franchised Main Dealers
- Stronger local Google visibility in the Map Pack and organic results for your make, model, and location
- Lower cost per forecourt lead with PPC built around high-intent transactional searches
- Improved organic rankings against AM100 competitors with bigger domain authority
- Higher website conversion rates — turning traffic into enquiries rather than bounces
- Elimination of wasted ad spend on brand protection terms that generate no incremental volume
- Measurable growth in showroom visits and sold units, reported in plain English every month
My Background
I started on the sales floor and progressed through every level of franchised retail — from salesperson to General Sales Manager to General Manager — at Volvo franchises in the Boston, Massachusetts market, one of the most competitive automotive retail environments in the United States.
During that time I wasn’t just managing people and processes. I was personally running PPC strategy, managing manufacturer covenant compliance, and making the marketing decisions that directly moved regional sales rankings. Not vanity metrics — actual forecourt volume.
That experience is what separates me from every general digital agency pitching car dealerships. I have sat in the Dealer Principal’s chair. I have managed manufacturer bonus targets, navigated OEM advertising covenants, and dealt with the same pressure you’re under right now.
Key Achievements
Taking Herb Chambers Volvo from 22nd to Number One — 16 Months
In October 2013 I was appointed General Sales Manager at a Volvo franchise recently acquired by the Herb Chambers Group in Boston. The dealership ranked 22nd out of 23 in the region for new vehicle sales volume.
I removed brand protection terms from the paid budget entirely — we were spending money to reach people already searching for us by name. That budget was redirected into high-intent transactional searches: specific model names, monthly payment terms, lease offers. All within full Volvo advertising covenant compliance.
Now back in the UK, I apply these proven tactics specifically for independent car dealers UK. I understand the unique challenges: manufacturer advertising covenants, part-exchange psychology, local competition, and the pressure to generate cost-effective leads without massive budgets.
Boston Volvo — Sales Volume Up 30% in a Market That Grew 4%
In March 2018 I was appointed General Manager at Boston Volvo, the same dealership I had previously taken to number one, now under the Village Auto Group. The site had slipped to second place and was carrying approximately $1 million in aged prior-model-year inventory.
Ineffective spend was cancelled immediately. Budget was concentrated into high-intent PPC targeting prior-model-year stock, structured around the postal areas where competitor customers were located — within Volvo manufacturer rules.
The number one position was regained. Sales volume increased by over 30% in a market that grew by just 4%. The majority of aged inventory was cleared within the first month.
Why a Motor Trade Specialist, Not a General Agency
General digital agencies treat a franchised main dealer like any other local business. They don’t know what a manufacturer covenant is. They don’t understand the difference between a franchise dealer and an independent forecourt. They’ve never dealt with OEM-mandated creative guidelines, model name trademark restrictions, or the political complexity of running PPC alongside a manufacturer’s own national campaigns.
I do. Because I’ve lived it.
With 27 years in franchised retail I understand the operational reality your marketing has to work inside. I know what a Dealer Principal actually needs from a marketing supplier — results that show up on the ranking table and the finance sheet, not on a website traffic dashboard.
I work exclusively with privately-owned and family-run franchised main dealers. If you’re not part of an AM100 group and you hold a manufacturer franchise, this is built for you.
How I Work With Franchised Dealerships
Audit and Diagnostic
A full audit of your website technical health, Google Business Profile, current rankings, paid search account, competitor visibility, and lead source performance. Identifies exactly where you’re losing ground before a single penny of budget is moved.
Local SEO and Google Business Profile Optimisation
Fixing the GBP issues that cost you local Map Pack visibility — NAP mismatches, wrong category hierarchies, orphaned pages from divested brands, missed schema signals — and building the local SEO signals that put you ahead of the AM100 sites dominating organically through sheer domain weight.
PPC Strategy Built Around Your Franchise and Your Market
Campaigns built inside your manufacturer covenant from day one. High-intent transactional searches. No wasted brand protection spend. Leads that land on your forecourt, not on a manufacturer portal.
Content That Ranks for the Searches Your Buyers Actually Make
Identifying the high-intent terms that bring in buyers close to a decision — model comparisons, finance options, approved used searches, local service queries — and building content that ranks and converts.
Transparent Reporting Against Forecourt Outcomes
Monthly reporting in plain English. Traffic, leads, cost per enquiry, where every pound went. No vanity metrics. If the work isn’t converting, the strategy changes.
